So, how much money can you make blogging? That is the question on many would-be and newbie bloggers have when considering or just starting a blog. How much can you realistically make? I’m sure we’ve all seen the stories of bloggers making $5,000 – $10,000 per month through blogging but is that the case for everyone and can every blog make that much money?

How much money you can make from blogging really depends on a number of factors. Pro Blogger did a survey back in 2014 to establish how much bloggers and these were the results.  4% of bloggers were earning more than $10,000 per month, while 9% made between $1,000 and $9,999. The vast majority were making a mere $3.50 per day and these were blogs less than 2 years old.

A lot of things have changed since 2014 and we know a lot more about how to get traffic to and monetize a blog a lot quicker. It’s not uncommon to make anywhere from $500 to $5,000 per month within your first year especially if you can drive traffic and monetize that traffic effectively.

These days, we can realistically earn anywhere from $0.01 to $0.10 per page view. This works out to $10 to $100 per every 1000 visitors to your blog. This means you can make up to $1,000 for every 10 000-page views. The more content you create, the more views you get and the more the revenue you are able to generate.

In the rest of this article, I will show you how you can start a blog and get traffic to it relatively quickly and start earning money within months. There are a few steps that you need to take in order to maximise the chances of building a successful blog that will actually earn you a lot of money.

How to Build a Profitable Blog and Earn Money

We are going to look at how you can maximise your chances of success when it comes to blogging. Before we dive into it, I would like to point out that the most important thing to do in this and any other business initiative is to begin.

Often times we waste time analysing things or trying to get them just right before we actually start. The biggest companies in the world put out imperfect products then improve them as they go. Look at Windows, for example.

When they put out a new Windows release, they always release new patches and updates with time. They are a billion-dollar company which understands the importance of moving. No one is going to be able to read that blog post if it’s still an idea in your head.

I’m not asking you to be reckless but I am saying don’t be a perfectionist especially when you are starting out. There will be a lot of opportunities to learn and grow but this can only happen when you are actually doing the work. You grow by doing.

I learned a lot of lessons working on my first blog years ago and these lessons are benefitting me today as I am able to do things smarter and at a quicker pace. Now for my 5-step process to building a profitable blog.

Choose the Right Niche

This is one of the keys and will determine whether or not you will see success in a relatively short time. The best kinds of niches are going to be something that you have a passion for or have experience in like a profession. I have a passion for online marketing and this has been the main factor in me choosing to start and run this blog.

Online marketing is a really competitive niche and it’s quite difficult to start seeing traction in this niche. I gave myself a period of 1 to 2 years to work on this blog before I start seeing the kinds of results, I am looking for but I know that the upward trajectory will be fast once I hit and pass a certain threshold.

Knowing this fact keeps me going despite the challenges that I have come across and am still facing. Despite this fact though, I have also become a bit shrewder in what I write about. I intend for the bulk of my traffic to come from Google and now implement a more diligent approach to keyword research.

I didn’t do this on my blog and would simply write about stuff I wanted to write about or what I thought people wanted to read about. Even though I did it this way, I definitely could have gotten much better results from the 80+ articles I had on that blog.

Whatever niche you end up choosing, it has to have a big enough number of buying customers. There’s no point of building a highly trafficked site only to not be able to monetize it. You also want this niche to not be too competitive especially if this is your first blog.

You can go for more competitive niches once you have gained the necessary skills to be able to do so.

Do Proper Keyword Research

Step 2 is to the keyword research. This is the second most important step because it will determine whether or not you are actually going to get visitors to your site. Look for low competition long-tail keywords that have low search volume.

It’s a numbers game at this point. You create a lot of content around these keywords and the numbers generally add up. What you will end up with is a steady stream of traffic that will grow more and more as your content begins to rank in the search engine.

Over time, your site authority will improve and at this point you will be able to go after higher competition keywords but make sure you still go or those keywords that are not too competitive. Put together a list of between 30 to 50 keywords that you can create content around.

Write Quality Content

Next up, you need to write quality, well-researched content around the keywords you have found. Make it a point to thoroughly research what you are going to write about. You won’t have to do that much research if you are writing about stuff you already have a passion for skilled in. It will come more naturally.

Next up, you need to write the content and it starts with an outline which looks something like this:

Intro:

Here you introduce what you will be talking about and make sure to include the keyword you are writing on in this paragraph.

Answer Paragraph:

In the next paragraph, you answer briefly the question that the rest o your article will be tackling. You need to bold this answer paragraph just as I did in this article. This will help you get snippets on Google.

A snippet is a summary answer to a search engine query which appears just before result number 1 in search engines. This is sometimes known as result zero and will drive large amounts of traffic to your site.

Point 1 to 3

Next, write at least 3 or more points that you will use to tackle the query. An easy way to get these points is to go to the search engine results page and look at the suggested searches at the bottom of the page.

These results show searchers intent and will help you write content that is relevant to their needs. Et 3 to 5 suggested posts and write an article that is at least 1300 to 1500 words. Google tends to reward longer posts that have quality.

At this point, give a summary of your answer and that’ it. You are done.

Monetize Your Content

Now for the money-making part. You can monetize your content in a lot of ways which include advertising through services like Google AdSense. You could also use affiliate marketing to take advantage of your audience.

Other monetisation methods include sponsored articles, speaking engagements, consultancy, creating your own course and more. The idea here is to look for ways you can earn the most money from your audience without being too pushy.

There needs to be a balance between providing quality content and asking for your audience’s money. If they feel that you are providing them with great value, they will be keener to give you their hard-earned money.

Create an Email List

This is one of the things I regretted not doing earlier when I ran my first blog. Let’s face it, the majority of visitors to your blog are going to come back. If you set up a lead capture system that collects emails, you are creating an asset.

Not only can you bring visitors back to your blog. You will also be able to make more money through marketing products to your list. The dollar value of members of a mailing list is anywhere from $1 to $5 per subscriber.

A 1000-member list will earn you anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 per month. That’s an amazing asset to have and the bigger it gets, the more money you are able to make.

Promote Your Content

Lastly, I will talk about how you can start getting traffic to your site. If you follow the steps in this article, you will start seeing traffic coming to your site from search engines but that usually takes some time. There are other, quicker ways to get traffic to your site.

You can use social media platforms like YouTube and Pinterest to drive a flood of traffic to your blog. Using this method, you can start seeing thousands of dollars o income within a few short months or even your first month.

You will need to create at least 10 blog posts then start promoting them. The 2 methods I mentioned are a great way to get traffic even though there are many other traffic sources available to you.
