The number one key determinant which Google looks at is the quality of the information being offered. Google always wants the user to have the best experience possible by presenting them with the best information on their search term.
When people begin to game the Google algorithm by tricking Google into ranking them higher, the result is that searchers don’t get what they are looking for or, in the very least, they don’t get the best quality information available.
If you are a content creator and you want it to rank well in Google, then you need to make sure that you offer quality. When you do this, your content will not only endure but it will survive Google’s algorithm updates.
How to get your content to rank well in Google
Number one on the list of determining factors when it comes to ranking your content well on Google is quality content. You simply can’t beat quality content. This has remained constant over the years and will continue to remain so for as long as Google is around. You simply can’t go around this.
As far as the second most important factor is concerned, the jury is out on this one. Some would say that backlinks are number 2 or maybe author and website authority. Google recently made algorithm changes that recognise the author’s experience and expertise in a field you are writing about.
This mainly targeted money, health and wellness. These are areas that affect your life and can mean life or death if the wrong information is prioritised. Google made this change to protect users. If you are a doctor and you write on health-related matters, your content will be prioritised over my content for example because I do not have a medical background (I’m sure my first aid certificate doesn’t count).
Lawyers are prioritised in legal matters and bankers or financial planners get top priority in any finance-related matters. I’m sure you are getting the gist of it. Try to steer clear of these areas unless you have the requisite track record in that field.
All other fields (at the time of writing this article) are pretty much fair game. You don’t necessarily need a proven track record in these areas to be able to get traction in them.
Keyword Research for Content Creators
Let’s assume you already have a blog or website since you are reading an article about website traffic. You want to get as much traffic to it from Google as possible and want to know how to do exactly that.
The first port of call is to do keyword research. Why is this important? To explain this, I will tell you a story about the first blog I ever ran. I managed to get around 80 articles on it but my target market was too small and I just wrote what I felt like writing.
I never did any research prior to writing these articles. 2 things happened. Firstly, I wrote content for very competitive keywords and the length and quality of my posts really didn’t give them a chance. A few of the 80 plus articles ended up ranking pretty well but it was really a matter of luck that I came across it.
More than 75 articles from this blog were dead. It is through this error that I discovered that I needed to write content about what people were actually looking for. For this website, I use different keyword tools as well as research methods to ensure that I know exactly what information people are interested in. This gives me a greater chance of ranking my content in the search engines.
Search Engine Optimization
Once you’ve done your keyword research, you need t make sure that you create your content the right way by optimising it for the search engines by doing what is known as search engine optimization. This is when you create your content following specific guidelines which put you in good standing with the Google search engine algorithm.
The Google algorithm ranks content high up in the search engines when the content meets certain criteria. When you write your content to satisfy these criteria, it is known as search engine optimization or SEO.
There are generally 2 types of SEO namely, on-page optimization and off-page optimization.
On-page search engine optimization is when you write your content in such a way that Google knows what you want your content for. This means that you need to include the keyword in the article title, first paragraph, last paragraph and sprinkled within the content.
How many times this keyword should appear really depends on the length of the article. In trying to place the keyword in the article, make sure that it appears in a natural manner and not look awkward.
With Google’s recent algorithm updates, it has become more and more smarter and you don’t need to keep throwing in the keyword as much. It is smart enough to recognise what it is that you are writing about.
The jury is out on this one but it has been said in some SEO circles that too many instances of your keyword appearing may actually hurt your ranking. This is termed keyword stuffing and you need to steer clear of it.
The most important thing to remember though is that you need to keep things as natural as possible. This means that you must write in a natural voice with a natural flow. In other words, write for human beings and not the search engines.
Too many people focus on trying to please the search engines and not enough on providing the reader with value.
When people start coming to your articles and actually spend time there reading your content, the search engines tend to push your content further and further up in the rankings. You will do well to remember that.
Other ranking factors include:
- Article Length (The longer the article, the higher up it seems to rank for a competitive keyword)
- Internal Links (Try to link to other related articles on your blog
- Links to other sites (I discovered this by accident but articles with links to other related sites have generally done better in search. In fact, my top-performing article on this blog has over 25 outgoing links. Many experts may disagree with this but when I say this, I tested it out with a few more articles and I could see the jump in their search engine rankings.
There is also what is known as off-page search engine optimisation. The Google search engine algorithm looks at a number of factors among which is the number and, above all, the quality of links back to your site.
When Google was in its early days, they used a ranking system where they looked at how many other sites were linking back to certain content. When another person linked to your content from another website, it was considered a “vote” which was an indicator that they viewed your content as valuable.
They started using this as one of the biggest factors for ranking content higher up in the search results. People quickly caught on to this and just started building a boatload of backlinks to their content.
It quickly became a backlink race and whoever could get the most won the search engine wars. I remember these days well. You could get a ready-made content-rich site with 100 or more articles then just start pointing backlinks to them and hope for the best.
The same site could be sold to hundreds or even thousands of people and those who could get links faster generally won. People were making upwards of $50,000 to $100,000 per month by doing this.
This led to a lot of low-quality results dominating the search engines and this was not good for Google’s business model. Then came the first of Google’s major search engine algorithm changes and overnight those sites were vanquished into search engine oblivion.
Ever since then, Google continuously releases new algorithm updates to make sure that their users get the best results possible. It would make this article excruciatingly long if we were to get into them all here but the short version is quality content keeps winning regardless of how many algorithm changes come along.
Over time, the value of a backlink has become less and less significant though it is still a significant ranking factor.
Backlinks are still very important today and are a worthwhile use of your time if you want to do well in the search engines. One of the best ways to do this is to network with established blogs in your space and ask to guest post for them.
Most will allow you to put a link back to your site. When you do this with a number of websites, you will gradually build your site’s authority in your niche. When Google sees this they establish that your content must be valuable and will show more and more of it higher up in the search results.
Not all backlinks are equal though. The authority and relevance of the site linking back to you accounts for a lot as far as the value of a backlink is concerned.
If you have a health-based site, for example, and major health governing body links to you, this is considered a high-value link and will not carry the same weight as a site that is new with no real authority in that space.
When the keyword you are ranking for is used as anchor text in the link back to your site, the value of that link multiplies. Remember this when you do a guest post.
