Personal Development Benefits – Why You Need to Work on Yourself

Want to know what the personal development benefits are? Well, you’ve come to the right place and by the time I finish this article, I hope to leave you better off than I found you.

I am not a self-help guru by any stretch of the imagination but what I am is someone who has made the decision to grow daily.

Personal development will manifest in various facets of your life through one way or another. You will see this in how your outlook on life changes drastically. There will be benefits in your career, relationships, personal effectiveness and many other areas that you can’t now imagine.

The first-ever personal development book I ever read was Seeds of Greatness by Dennis Waitley. It had been among a set of books that one of my late uncles left us. For years it just set there without the slightest desire to read it on my part.

It was most probably due to the age I was at the time. I was barely 12 years old at the time. Fast forward 5 years later, I finally took up the book and read it. It began a journey of personal development for me. 20 years later from that day, I have read and listened to over 1000 personal development books and audio programmes.

I am personal development junkie and am always looking for ways that I can grow as an individual. In this article, I will talk about the benefits that I have derived from reading personal growth books.

benefits of personal development for an individual

I will start off by talking about the benefits of personal development for an individual. We live in a fast-changing world. The world has taken on a very different outlook as opposed to 20 years ago.

If you don’t take on the personal initiative to move with the times by growing, you will quickly lose relevance. The fact that you are reading this article tells me that you are different from the rest and would definitely want to develop yourself.

It has become glaringly obvious that the traditional form of education has lost relevance in the modern-day and age. This is really felt in the technology industry.

Companies like Google and Apple have stopped prioritising college degrees because by the time that someone finishes their degree program, what they learned in college will now be obsolete in a real-world application.

This led to Google setting up Google University as part of an initiative to bridge the gap between what colleges are teaching and what’s needed in the real world.

I’m going to list some of the benefits that I have gotten from reading and applying self-development principles.

I have gained a lot of clarity as far as exactly what I want out of life. I not only know what I want but how to go about getting it in a structured way. I talk about my journey in these articles:

In these articles, I go into detail on how I have been able to move from difficult situations in my life to better ones through a structured approach and clear approach. I have been able to deal with and go through extremely difficult situations in a calm manner because of what I had learned.

Basically, my approach to life is that of hope in any situation regardless of the obstacles in my way. I have watched seeming roadblocks and challenges in my life make an about-turn for the better.

Linked to clarity, I have a better sense of where I want to go in life and how to get there. I have discovered that moving from where I am to where I want to go is really a simple process if you know how to build the road map.

I have clear goals that have a structured road map that details the exact steps that take me from a departure point to my destination. As a matter of fact, Robert Kiyosaki in Rich Dad’s Guide to Investing said that his Rich Dad taught him that the plan to getting rich is boring.

Because the plan is boring, very few people follow through on it and by implication, very few people are rich. Because I have direction, I keep myself on the path and get myself back whenever I stray from the path.

Carrying on with personal development benefits, I have also learned the power of focus. We have all heard the proverbial power of the magnifying glass being used as an example of what can happen when one is focused and has a strong sense of direction in their lives.

The biggest challenge I have discovered with reading and listening to over 1000 personal development books is that you can easily get distracted and move from one formula to the next without really seeing any results.

As a matter of fact, for a large portion of time, I was not able to get positive results merely because I was not focused. I was like the kid in a candy store who had been given the option to choose whatever I wanted in the store.

Because of the overwhelming amount of choices, it was very difficult for me to chose 1 and stick with it. I kept jumping from one system to another. Fortunately, I identified this flaw and have been working on it, which leads me to my next point:

Ability to Self Assess

I play Basketball and when I was starting out, I was taught the acronym B-E-E-F when shooting a basketball.

B stands for balance. I needed to be balanced to take a good shot.

E stands for Eyes. I needed to fix my eyes on the target which is the rim

the second e stands for Elbow. My shooting elbow needed to be in line with the rim

F and finally the f Follow through. I needed to follow through when I took the shot.

We were taught this acronym so that we self-corrected during practices and in-game situations when we were not shooting right.

Reading personal development taught me to self assess and correct myself whenever I stray off my path.

 Importance of personal development plan

If you read between the lines, I kept talking about having a plan and sticking to that plan. This has been one of the greatest lessons from my personal development journey. There are many roads that can take us to our chosen destination but only one road is ever needed.

It will serve you better if this road is the shortest distance from where you are to where you want to go. Sometimes though, situations require that you take the longer route towards your destination. The key is to have a plan, which is your road map.

I hope this article on personal development benefits has helped you start off on your own journey of personal development. As always, I would love to hear your personal experiences and your comments on this article in the comments section below.
